Acetone will not dissolve fully cured resins. Partially cured resins will go soft when acetone is applied.
Normally we would not re-commend using acetone because it can break down the epoxy itself, causing problems with the cure and the finished mechanical properties, although some people do use it in this way (in very small quantities) and do not report adverse affects.
If you do need to 'thin' an epoxy very slightly then a better product would be denatured alcohol/purple methylated spirits as those solvents will not damage the resin and will evaporate during the curing process. This would require your own experimentation and the amount of alcohol should be kept to a minimum.
