This tube has an outside diameter (OD) of 20mm and an inside diameter (ID) of 17mm, resulting in a 1.5mm wall thickness and is manufactured using high strength unidirectional carbon fibre down the length of the tube for stiffness, interspersed with layers of unidirectional Carbon fibre at 90° around the tube to provide strength in the hoop direction. The tube is not cosmetically finished and shows unidirectional carbon fibre on the outside with a slight ribbed texture from the manufacturing process.
Available in 1000mm (1m) and 2000mm (2m) lengths.

Carbon fibre tube can be used to replace or substitute aluminium or steel tubes in a wide range of projects. Their superior mechanical properties mean that tubes of the same weight as an aluminium or steel tube can be much stronger, or that tubes of the same strength can be much lighter.
This tube is manufactured using unidirectional prepreg carbon fibre oriented to provide maximum strength in the lateral (length-ways) axis but the use of prepreg reinforcement oriented at 90° also ensures that the tube has good crush-strength; ideal for real-world applications.
The use of unidirectional fibres and maximum strength in the lateral axis does mean that the tube is not strong across its diameter as it is along its length so should be used in such a way as to avoid unnecessary crushing forces across the tube.

Roll Wrapping
The phrase "roll wrapped" refers to the process used to manufacture these tubes. The prepreg carbon fibre is first laid up around a mandrel in multiple layers. Once the reinforcement is in place it is spiral wrapped with heat-shrink tape (this is what gives roll-wrapped tubes their characteristic ribbed appearance) before the whole assembly is oven cured.
Roll wrapped carbon fibre tubes offer superior strength in general use to "pultruded" tubes (which have all their fibres running in exactly the same direction). This is because forces on a tube are rarely exclusively in straight compression or tension, whereby the unidirectional fibres of a pultruded tube are not ideal.
How to Cut and Shape
This carbon fibre tube can easily be cut and finished using simple workshop tools like a hacksaw and some wet-and-dry paper. Cutting and finishing a carbon fibre tube can also be perfectly safe if you follow some basic safety precautions.
For a comprehensive guide to both safety advice and cutting and finishing techniques watch our video guide to cutting and shaping carbon fibre sheet and carbon fibre parts.
Mechanical Properties & Specification
Our roll wrapped carbon fibre tubes are manufactured from unidirectional prepreg carbon fibre oriented at 0° (down the length of the tube) and Crush/burst strength is provided by additional unidirectional prepreg carbon fibre oriented at 90° (around the section of the tube).

We don't have figures for the torsional strength of our roll wrapped carbon fibre tubes because they're not really designed for torsional load applications. These figures would be calculable (from the layup schedule and the fibre properties) but it's very involved work. Tubes designed for torsional load, like a prop-shaft or steering column, would normally make extensive use of +/-45° (or similar) fibre orientation because 0 or 90° fibre orientation means that the torsional load would try to shear the tube. If you wanted to 'adapt' a roll wrapped tube like this to improve its torsional load capabilities then laminating some layers of our Carbon Fibre Braided Sleeve would add significant +/-45° fibre orientation and so torsional strength. Our EL2 Epoxy Laminating Resin would make a good resin to wet the braid out with and our Composites Shrink Tape could be used to consolidate the resin/braid whilst it cures.
Unfortunately it is not possible to cut a usable thread into carbon fibre composites. The nature of the material is such that the teeth on a thread would not be able to take any load and would break up either during thread turning or the first attempt at using the thread.
Where it is desirable to have a threaded method of attaching the tube or rod, it is commonplace to fabricate and then bond an aluminium insert into the tube or over the rod end which can then have a thread cut into it.
No, the maximum length available for our standard roll wrapped tubes is 2.5m. Our woven finish roll wrapped tubes are available in lengths up to 2m. Unfortunately we can't supply tubes in lengths longer than those listed on the website.
Unfortunately not. Our roll wrapped tubes are only available in the listed wall thickness and diameters.
The maximum service temperature of the Roll Wrapped Carbon Fibre tubes is 80°C.
There is no manufacturers tolerance for the straightness of these tubes due to the method of manufacture. As such they are not available to any specific set tolerance in terms of straightness. However if you have a specialist requirement or use for these tubes, please get in contact and we can measure the current stock to see if they meet with your requirements.
Many people prefer the natural finish of these carbon products, however if you wish to paint them for your specific application then you can do so. A light key with a fine abrasive paper like a 1200 grit wet and dry paper and a thorough degrease and clean using mild detergent or an alcohol wipe should be all that is needed to prepare the surface for paint.
